Can you run ChatGPT offline?

A PHNTM GUIDE · SOURCES AT THE END · UPDATED SEPTEMBER 30, 2026

ChatGPT itself needs an internet connection to OpenAI's service. An offline AI assistant runs a different model on your own computer or appliance. Once its software and model files are installed, it can generate answers without a cloud connection.

This guide explains three ways to get an offline assistant, what to expect from small local models, and how to check that a device really works disconnected.

Explore a local AI appliance

Try the PHNTM One interactive demo to explore conversation, memory, voice and system status. It is a browser simulation; the video and measurements below come from the actual device.

How an offline AI assistant works

A local model keeps its model files on your hardware and computes its answers there. Tools such as Ollama and LM Studio run downloadable models such as Gemma and Llama. Local processing still needs electricity, memory and storage. It does not need an internet connection for each answer.

Download the software and model before disconnecting. Check which model is selected: some runners also offer cloud models, and optional web search, remote speech or integrations can send information outside your device. Local inference alone does not establish the privacy of an entire application.

Three ways to run AI offline

  1. Use your existing computer. Install a local runner and a model that fits its available RAM or GPU memory. This is a practical way to try local conversation and drafting before buying hardware. Document search, persistent memory and voice depend on the application you choose.
  2. Build a dedicated assistant. A mini PC or Raspberry Pi can run continuously, but you own the work of selecting a model, connecting voice and document tools, managing memory and checking recovery. Our Raspberry Pi 5 build log explains the 8 GB constraints.
  3. Choose a prepared appliance. PHNTM One combines a Raspberry Pi 5, touchscreen, local model, memory, document search and tap-to-talk voice. It is $799, with made-to-order purchasing now open. Compare the hardware in the specifications and the alternatives in the buyer's guide.

What PHNTM One does without internet

In Private mode, conversation, saved memory, local document retrieval, speech recognition and spoken replies run on the device. Your documents and downloaded reference material provide information beyond what the small model knows. The features page explains the available tools.

Internet-dependent services remain internet-dependent. Optional Boosted mode sends prompts to Anthropic using your own key. Telegram, email and other connected services need their respective connections. For a fully disconnected check, choose Private mode and disconnect external integrations.

Local AI speed and limitations

  • Response time: the published PHNTM One figures describe roughly two words per second, with short answers often taking tens of seconds. The first answer after the model unloads can take longer. Read the dated measurements and methods; these are not a benchmark of every shipped unit.
  • Reasoning: small models can help with notes, drafting and questions about local documents. They are less capable than larger cloud models on difficult tasks and can still invent an answer. Check important statements against the source.
  • Current information: a disconnected model cannot browse live websites. It can work with the files and reference packs already present.

How to test whether an assistant works offline

  1. Finish setup and download the model. Select the local or Private mode and disconnect external integrations.
  2. Keep the assistant powered on. Remove Ethernet and disable Wi-Fi, or disconnect your router's internet uplink while retaining your local network for phone access.
  3. Ask a new question on the device's own touchscreen. Save a memory, start a fresh conversation and ask it to recall that memory.
  4. Ask about a document already on the device, inspect the cited passage, and try a voice request.

That checks disconnected operation. To audit outbound traffic while connected, follow the separate Watch the Wire procedure. A device answering offline and a packet capture during normal use provide different evidence.

Questions

Is there an offline version of ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is OpenAI's hosted service. An offline assistant uses a different model, such as Gemma or Llama, running on your own hardware.
Can a Raspberry Pi run an offline AI assistant?
Yes, with a small model that fits its memory. PHNTM One uses a Raspberry Pi 5 with 8 GB RAM. Answers are slower than on larger hardware, and memory must be shared with the interface, documents and voice.
Does an offline AI assistant need a subscription?
Local inference does not require a cloud subscription. Hardware, electricity and any software licensing still have costs. PHNTM One is $799 with no required subscription; optional cloud use on your own key is billed separately by the provider.
Is a local model as good as ChatGPT?
Small local models are useful for conversation, notes and local documents, but larger cloud models are generally stronger on difficult reasoning. Local models can also make mistakes, and they run more slowly on small hardware.
